Jos Verstappen has spoken about his son’s first Formula 1 world championship after an intense race in Abu Dhabi.

Max Verstappen made history on Sunday as he became the first Dutchman to win the F1 world title. He did that in the most dramatic way – by overtaking his rival Lewis Hamilton on the last lap of the race.

After the race, his father Jos shared thoughts about the crazy season finale.

“I’m very proud [of Max], of course,” he told Sky Sports. “I mean, of course, because of the Safety Car, we are in this situation, but still, you have to do it, and I think the team had a good strategy on that as well. They called him in [to the pits].”

“They’re doing a lot of things very good, and I think Max was the driver this year – he really deserved this championship.”

Verstappen Snr. also praised his son’s performance throughout the race.

“I think the whole team was worried because we know their [Mercedes’] speed,” he added. “But still he kept fighting. He will always fight. That’s in his DNA, I guess. And that’s what he has done today. He said to me, ‘Every lap I was flat out and driving to the maximum’.”

“And then he had one chance, one lap, and that’s what he took.”
