Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is optimistic about his team’s strategy for tomorrow’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Championship contender Lewis Hamilton qualified second for the race, with rival Max Verstappen starting on pole position.

Wolff recognized that they will have a disadvantage at the start due to their selection of tires. However, the team principal is confident their strategy will give them the upper hand in the championship decider.

“I’d much rather be starting on the medium [compound],” Wolff told Sky Sports. “We will have a slight disadvantage on the start, I guess, and the first six or seven laps if [Verstappen] drives fast.

“We can go longer. We can go for an aggressive undercut, and try to control track position. Overnight we will be running lots of programs and algorithms.

“Whoever’s going to be faster tomorrow will win the race, irrespective of who starts on which tire. We just need to build on that and recoup, and then hopefully come out on top tomorrow.”
