Mario Isola has revealed that the new curbs at the Yas Marina Circuit may cause tire issues similar to the ones at the Qatar GP.

The inaugural Qatar GP was a big challenge because of significant tire degradation caused by curbs. Valtteri Bottas, Lando Norris, George Russell, and Nicholas Latifi all had punctures because of that.

Ahead of the Abu Dhabi GP, new curbs were installed at the Yas Marina Circuit and the Pirelli head of F1 and car racing admitted that they could damage the tires throughout the race weekend.

“They are very similar [to Qatar], they are not exactly the same. Especially they are quite aggressive at the exit of turn 5 and turn 9,” Isola said.

“We saw from free practice both in F2 and F1 that they [the drivers] are running especially over the curbs and the exit of Turn 9, that is also the turn with the highest speed.”

“And I’m sure that in qualifying they will use the curbs and maybe also during the race if the race if they push during the races. So there is this element that we have to consider.”

“Clearly we have a different situation compared to Qatar, it’s a different speed, it’s a different time they stay over the curb, but it is in any case, something we have to consider, and we have to pay attention.”
