Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone says Mercedes is “bullying” Max Verstappen in the title fight.

The upcoming Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will decide who will be the 2021 F1 champion, as both Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are equal on points.

In an interview with AFP, Ecclestone said the Silver Arrows are playing a psychological game with the Dutchman.

“Max has more than just the race to confront because he also has Mercedes on his back. They are bullying him and not playing fair. They are playing a psychological game with him.

“Mercedes are trying to undercut Max all the time. And the stewards are watching because Toto keeps going to race control.”

When it comes to experience in a title fight, Hamilton has the advantage over his Dutch rival, and Ecclestone knows this. “Max is still a child compared to Lewis,” he said.

“Max has been competing for a few years, but he doesn’t have the experience of Lewis. He has been living with the knowledge that he rules with Mercedes for years. For Max, it’s the first time he’s been in a car he can be world champion with.”

Ecclestone also shared his thoughts on the 2021 F1 season, which is one of the closest title fights in recent years.

“This has been an incredible year,” he said.

“I think last years, people knew very well in advance who was going to win. It’s good that it’s different this year.”
