Max Verstappen was slammed with a 5-place grid drop for Sunday’s Qatar GP after he failed to slow down efficiently for yellow flags.

Why it matters: The Dutchman will drop 5 more positions behind his rival and the polesitter Lewis Hamilton, making today’s race very difficult.

  • Pierre Gasly stopped on the main straight towards the end of Q3 after sustaining a puncture from contact with curbs. Consequently, the marshalls signalled for drivers to slow down with the yellow flags.
  • Verstappen was one of the drivers under investigation after qualifying for not slowing down sufficiently under the yellow-flagged conditions.
  • Verstappen will now start P7 for the Qatar GP, his championship rival getting away from pole.
