Sergio Perez blames rain during the last lap of qualifying for missing out on pole position.

Why it matters: The Mexican had set the fastest time of the session in the earlier stages but was then overtaken by his teammate Verstappen, who took pole, and Hamilton who finished second.

  • Pérez explained rain affected him in the final lap of qualifying, though admits the starting position won’t be as crucial as the race will focus more on tire degradation.

What he said:

  • “We were very close on the final lap. I think we did a great job as a team, but unfortunately, my final attempt was not as good throughout the lap. The rain hit me a bit too hard in the final sector and I lost some grip.”
  • “It will be a long race tomorrow. I think the starting position is not the most relevant, because the tire wear will be high. I’m looking forward to it.”
