Sergio Perez has topped the standings of the second free practice session of the United States Grand Prix.

After an interesting opening practice session, the racing action at the Circuit of The Americas resumed later in the day.

The pit lane exit was opened and plenty of drivers went to the track. Lando Norris did not have a good start to the session as he had to go to the garage because of technical issues.

Mercedes and Red Bull Racing were on top of the timesheets straightaway with Sergio Perez ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen. The championship rivals Hamilton and Verstappen had a controversial moment on the start-finish straight.

Norris came back to the race track after resolving issues and instantly went up to the top 5 of the standings. Later on, Lance Stroll set the new fastest lap of FP2. It did not last for long though as both Mercedes drivers went significantly quicker. However, Hamilton’s lap time was eventually deleted due to the track limits violation.

Halfway through the practice, Perez came back to the lead, being four-tenths quicker than Bottas. The afternoon did not go as planned for Verstappen as he had issues with traffic, which left him quite frustrated. Nikita Mazepin was also dissatisfied with the traffic on the track as he had nearly collided with Lance Stroll in turn 1.

In the final part of the session, the drivers had race simulation runs. The Mercedes and Red Bull drivers had the best pace at around 1:41. A couple of minutes before the checkered flag, Fernando Alonso had a spin and had slight contact with a barrier.

Nothing changed upfront as Perez was the fastest driver on Friday afternoon. Norris was second, while Lewis Hamilton completed the top 3.
