Lewis Hamilton has set the fastest lap time of the opening free practice session of the Turkish GP.
The Turkish GP race weekend started on Friday morning with the first free practice at Istanbul Park.
The session began and the drivers rushed to the race track. Lewis Hamilton got the early lead in the practice with his lap of 1:27.439. Charles Leclerc was very close to the Briton, while Pierre Gasly followed the Ferrari driver.
Max Verstappen left the pits in his white Red Bull for the first time and the Dutchman immediately went to the top of the timesheets. However, this did not last long as Hamilton and Norris went quicker.
Track limits were enforced at turns 6 and 14. Kimi Raikkonen and Carlos Sainz were among the drivers that went too wide in these sections and violated the rule.
Alpine had good form in the first half of the session as Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso were 2nd and 4th respectively. At the same time, Hamilton improved his lap time by a quarter of a second. Eventually, his title rival Verstappen came back to the top 3.
The drivers kept setting lap times, but there were no significant changes upfront. Hamilton topped the session after getting a new engine. Verstappen and Leclerc followed him in the top 3.
