Antonio Giovinazzi is in great shape in Monza, and he also admitted that, by saying that he was happy with his performance on Saturday.

Why it matters: The Italian overtook Sergio Perez right at the start, and he went up to P9. Then, Pierre Gasly retired and Giovinazzi took P8. The Alfa Romeo driver said he was happy to keep Perez behind until the end.

  • Giovinazzi will start seventh on the grid on Sunday as Valtteri Bottas will drop last on the grid for PU change.

It was again a positive day. I focused on the start, gained a position there, and gained a position to Perez, and after that, it was just keeping the position. It was not easy at the end of the race to keep Perez behind, but really happy.

Go deeper:

  • Giovinazzi’s teammate, Robert Kubica, had something to say about the race too. The Pole was more unlucky than Antonio as he finished only P18.
  • “It started very badly,” said Kubica. “I don’t know what happened at the start. Probably I did something wrong but I didn’t manage to pull away completely, so I lost a lot of meters, space.
  • “But it allowed me to have an overview of what was going on and I placed myself very well into the first chicane, where I gained one or two positions. And then, I did a bit of rally-style move into the second chicane, where I gained two positions.”
