Lewis Hamilton is the quickest driver in the only free practice ahead of the Italian GP qualifying.
After an unforgettable race weekend at Zandvoort, Formula 1 came to one of the most legendary race tracks in the world – Monza.
The green flag was up at the pit lane exit, and FP1 got underway. The majority of drivers had hard tires on, while some chose mediums.
Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris started the day with slight mistakes in turn 1, while Lewis Hamilton took the early lead in the session. Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas followed him. Yuki Tsunoda had a concern regarding his seatbelt.
Perez felt comfortable at the Temple of Speed as he went on top of the standings, being 0.135 seconds quicker than Hamilton. At the same time, his teammate Max Verstappen had struggles.
The 2019 race winner Charles Leclerc collected a big lap, which put him in second place, but it was deleted due to the violation of track limits at Parabolica. Several minutes later, Daniel Ricciardo beat Perez’s lap time to top the standings. Pierre Gasly was less than a tenth of a second away from the Australian.
The drivers started setting lap times on soft tires in the final third of the practice. Verstappen set the quickest lap on that compound. However, Hamilton eventually was even faster by almost half a second on mediums.
All in all, Hamilton’s benchmark was not reached, so the Briton remained the leader of FP1. His championship rival Verstappen was second, while Bottas completed the top 3.
