Formula 1 announced that it is planning to change the brand new Sprint Qualifying format from 2022.

Why it matters: The first Sprint Qualifying was pretty successful at Silverstone. However, one change that drivers, teams, and fans would like to see is that the short race would not count as qualifying but as a stand-alone race.

Details:

  • The idea is to award more points in the Sprint Qualifying event, and make the Friday qualifying count for both the race on Saturday and the one on Sunday.

There’s a number of things we can do, and number of ways we could do it. So I think that’s being studied at the moment. There are some ideas, and we’ll present them to the FIA and the teams and go from there.
