Mercedes admitted that they are still considering whether to take a penalty or not in the upcoming races to fit the fourth power unit on their cars.

Why it matters: The teams can only use three engines without taking a grid penalty. Lewis Hamilton’s power unit failed during free practice at Zandvoort, and Mercedes is still not sure whether it can be saved or not.

  • Mercedes stated that if there is no “significant downside” it will consider taking a penalty at some point in the second part of the season.
  • Taking a penalty means that if Red Bull manages to avoid that, Mercedes could risk losing points from the Milton Keynes outfit in the championship.

If an opportunity to take a PU #4 presents itself without significant downside, then we will look at it – but no firm plans at this stage.
