Alexander Albon was announced as George Russell’s replacement for Williams but had to be released from Red Bull in order to make it happen.

Why it matters: Red Bull was hoping Albon continued in their program but had to release him so he could join Williams.

  • Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said he had no problems in Albon joining Williams as long as he was released from his Red Bull contract.
  • Nicholas Latifi will continue in the team, racing alongside his new teammate.

What they had to say:

  • “We have released Alex to become a Williams Racing driver in 2022, but retain a relationship with him that includes future options,” a Red Bull statement reads.
  • “He [Albon] is a Williams driver and we decide what he is doing and what he is not doing,” Capito said when asked if Albon could be called by Red Bull next year.
