Toto Wolff accepts the fact that Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing have had a day without any mistakes in the Netherlands.
The home hero Verstappen had an impressive race and won at Zandvoort to come back to the championship lead. Mercedes team principal Wolff thinks that both the Dutchman and Red Bull Racing were flawless on Sunday.
“When you have the quickest car on track, whatever you try on strategy is difficult. Credit to Max, credit to Red Bull, they were really faultless today,” Wolff told Sky Sports.
At the same time, he thinks that the fight is far from being over as F1 heads to Monza, the track which fits Mercedes better.
“It’s so close together and here Max was the quickest. It’s his home track, but Monza is going to maybe be a different environment and we believe we’re in the running for the championship,” Wolff commented.
It all came down to strategy decisions in the fight for the race win. Verstappen took hard tires at his second pit stop, while Hamilton got mediums in order to have pace advantage. However, tire degradation did not allow the Briton to pass his opponent. Wolff reveals that they did not anticipate Red Bull to choose hard compound.
“I think we had a sniff of an undercut so we didn’t time it right there. We didn’t expect them [Red Bull] to go onto the hard tire because it was an unknown and we didn’t try the hard tire on Friday.
“The hard tire was a bit of a gamble because you could see that on the Ferraris that it was going well, but it was unknown territory.”
