After a superb win at home, Max Verstappen could not hide the relief of satisfying his home crowd after a stressful weekend.
Verstappen put all the chances on his side on Saturday already, claiming the pole position although championship rival Lewis Hamilton sent the 23-year-old a message, putting up a terrific second lap and closing the gap to the Dutchman after the Red Bull driver proved to be at least 2 tenths faster than Mercedes throughout the weekend.
On Sunday, the pressure was high as Mercedes had two cars to destabilize Verstappen and try to claim the victory thanks to a good strategy. However, the Dutch prodigy had an almost perfect race, covering Mercedes’ strategy attacks after attacks, pitstops after pitstops. Reflecting on his almost perfect weekend, Verstappen could not hide the relief of giving his fans great satisfaction.
“It’s a very good day, the start was very important we did that well,” Verstappen said. “Then of course Mercedes tried to make it difficult for us but we managed very well, and we can be very pleased with the team’s performance today.
“As you can hear already, it’s just incredible.
“Of course, the expectations were very high going into the weekend and it’s never easy to fulfill, but I’m so happy to win here, to take the lead in the championship, it’s just an amazing day with the crowd.”
