Sergio Perez will drive for Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen in 2022. Pierre Gasly from sister team AlphaTauri says it is a “small disappointment” that he was not offered the seat.
Gasly, who already drove for Red Bull in 2019 and failed to convince there, however, was able to record much better results with the AlphaTauri team and even took a victory at Monza in 2020. The fact that Red Bull opted for Perez and that he was not asked to come back to the mother team for 2022 was a disappointment for him. It is now very likely that the Frenchman will extend his contract with Alpha Tauri for 2022.
“I wonder why. There were discussions. It was up to them, unfortunately, it didn’t happen,” Gasly said.
“I think they were really happy with my performance but, obviously, not only this, you know like me how difficult it is and they made their decision.
“Obviously, it was a small disappointment for me because that’s where I want to be, I want to have a fast car… I’m not saying AlphaTauri don’t give me a really strong car.
“It doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen in the future but for sure, next year, I’m not going to drive there.”
The comparison at the Dutch GP alone shows that Gasly is currently getting on better with his car than Perez. The Mexican qualified 16th and Gasly 4th.
“For whatever reason, the car really felt great in qualy, [we] managed to find some extra time. [It is] unbelievable to qualify in front of the two Ferraris, it’s really good.”
