Williams F1 CEO Jost Capito said that Williams is in no rush to decide their driver line-up for the 2022 season, in light of rumors linking Alexander Albon and Nyck de Vries to the team, dismissing the idea of a “time pressure”.
As George Russell seems likely to move to Mercedes next season, the chatter regarding Williams progressively heightened which does not worry Capito, who said that they are still sorting out their options.
“As I always mentioned, we’ve got time, we have no time pressure at all in sorting out our drivers,” Capito said.
“There has not been an announcement with George. So we will see what our options will be in the future. We have some options, and we are sorting them out.
“There are others with Formula 1 experience and there are others who are, I think, young drivers who really push hard to get into Formula 1.”
Capito admitted that the team looked into options outside Formula 1, but also stated that bringing in a driver from a different category would require time to be spent to become familiar with the F1 car.
“Yeah, you can have a driver who has Formula 1 experience, that is never negative. It’s always a positive,” Capito explained.
“The cars are new and everybody has to learn to drive these new cars, you can also bring a newcomer in and the rookie in, because then the gap is the smallest, as everybody has to get his head around driving a different car.
“It’s like driving in a different category a bit. So it’s also an ideal point to bring somebody new into Formula 1 with the lowest risk.”
