Kimi Raikkonen announced his retirement from Formula 1 on Wednesday. It was expected, but he will still leave a big mark in the pinnacle of motorsports.
He is the driver with most Grand Prix starts in F1 history. However, he took his last victory back in 2018 at the United States GP. At that time he was still driving for Ferrari, then he switched to Alfa Romeo Racing, where he will now stay until the end of his career.
Many fans and motorsports personalities, including his teammate Antonio Giovinazzi, thanked Raikkonen for his F1 career. Among them also was the Alfa Romeo team boss Frederic Vasseur, who looked back on the years with the Finn.
“There isn’t any driver out there like Kimi Räikkönen. His presence, his charisma and his unique attitude, matched with the innate skill that made this team give him a chance back in 2001, have made him a legend of our sport in a way which numbers and statistics struggle to convey.
“It was a pleasure to work with him in these years and I believe I speak on behalf of everyone at Alfa Romeo Racing Orlen, from the shop floor in Hinwil to the garage here in Zandvoort, when I say a driver like Kimi has written some indelible pages of our team’s, and our sport’s, history.”
