Maverick Vinales will start his new adventure with Aprilia the upcoming weekend at Aragon.
The former Yamaha rider said some months ago that he would be leaving the team one year earlier than expected since his relationship with the team was not the best anymore.
Vinales had to end his season with Yamaha and then join Aprilia in 2022. However, after being suspended by Yamaha at the Austrian GP since Maverick was trying to deliberately damage his bike’s engine, the Spaniard decided to join the new team earlier before the end of the current season.
Vinales tried the Aprilia RS-GP bike in a private test at Misano and at the San Marino GP track. Plus, the team confirmed that Vinales will replace Lorenzo Savadori for the last races and the latter will be a test driver in 2022.
“We are extremely proud to be able to announce our plans for the current season and 2022 to optimize the contributions of our three riders to the utmost,” Aprilia CEO Massimo Rivola said.
“Alongside our confirmed rider, Aleix [Espargaro], it is our pleasure to welcome a talented athlete like Maverick to the Aprilia Racing team, who demonstrated a great feeling with the team and the bike straight away and who I am confident will be able to give his best as early as the Aragon GP.
“At the same time, we are also confirming Lorenzo’s role as 2022 test rider.
“This is a fundamental position that rewards the great efforts he has demonstrated in developing the new RS-GP, whereas he will finish out the 2021 season taking advantage of the wild cards that we’ll decide on together as soon as he is back to 100% fitness.”
