George Russell is excited about getting second place in the Belgian Grand Prix qualifying on Sunday.
The crazy qualifying session at Spa Francorchamps saw one of the most surprising results this season – Russell got the second quickest lap time in Q3 in his Williams car. After the impressive session, the Briton was in shock.
“I don’t know what to say, to be honest. I thought we’d have done a good job to get out of Q1 given how we got on yesterday and now we’re standing here on the front row,” he said.
“I think the guys did an amazing job today, [we were] on the track at the right time, car was feeling great and I had so much confidence, so onto tomorrow now.”
Russell thinks that the fact the team “had nothing to lose” in Q3 benefitted them.
“I think I was in a fortunate position where we had nothing to lose. We were in Q3 which is not a norm for us and we just had to go for it,” he commented.
The Williams driver already has his eyes on Sunday as he wants to score points for the team.
“We saved the full maximum engine mode for the last lap, and we just though, let’s go for it and obviously tomorrow is the important one. We’ve got to go out there and score some more points.”
