Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner confirmed that Haas will still field one driver from the Ferrari Driver Academy for 2022, irrespective of Mick Schumacher’s relationship with Haas.

Schumacher’s future at Haas is far from confirmed and while Steiner expressed his desire to retain their current line-up for 2022, he also stated that should the German leave, Haas will sign a Ferrari junior in his place.

“Mick is contracted to Ferrari, and we will be having a Ferrari driver,” Steiner said, on a column for The Race.

“If it’s not Mick, fine, they [Ferrari] have a few other good ones. It would be ideal if Mick stays on and I’m pretty sure that that is what will happen.”

Steiner also took the moment to address the progress of the all-rookie lineup the team has this season, stating that while he expected mistakes and incidents from the drivers, he was particularly puzzled by Schumacher’s incidents, which occurred later in the season.

Steiner in the past called out the expensive mistakes of both drivers, in an attempt to cut their losses in the era of harsh cost caps, where damages can make or break a team.

“Obviously, you anticipate some damage with rookie drivers, but if you look at it, Nikita made a few mistakes in the beginning, but they were never big ones,” Steiner added.

“But with Mick in the last races we’ve had quite a few big ones and it’s a bit strange to me that these didn’t happen in the beginning of the season, it was after five or six races.”
