AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost admitted that AphaTauri’s performance thus far has been “average” and there is still a lot to improve if the team were to climb up the midfield.
Currently, the Red Bull sister team stands sixth behind Alpine and ahead of Aston Martin after a string of appreciable results from Pierre Gasly, who scored 50 points of AlphaTauri’s tally of 68.
“Average I would say five. A five means, out of 10, that there is still 50% to improve,” Tost said, when asked to rate AlphaTauri’s season so far.
“It’s a tough fight. We have very strong teams close to us, with Aston Martin and Alpine, and we have to do everything to finish in fifth place.
“The last three races [before Budapest], I am not very satisfied, because we only scored four points. […] In Austria during the two races and at Silverstone. And of course, that wasn’t enough. I expected a lot more.”
Tost went into detail while describing the first half f the season, stating that a string of incidents prevented the team from potentially scoring more points.
He also expressed disappointment for the times when the team barely scored any points, coming off the back of strong performances at the start of the season.
“We had some very good races, some highlights. You know, when I watch the at the start of the season we were very competitive, as we are now,” Tost added.
“[Pierre] was in fifth place in qualifying in Bahrain, unfortunately [there was] this accident with [Daniel] Ricciardo where he lost the front wing, and the race was lost. But Yuki [Tsunoda], on her first race, scored points and finished in ninth place.”
