Jorge Martin has set a lap record at Red Bull Ring to steal the Austrian GP pole position from Fabio Quartararo in the final seconds.

Shortly after the FP4 was over, qualifying went underway at Spielberg’s Red Bull Ring to determine the starting grid for Sunday’s MotoGP Austrian GP.

Q1 saw a battle for two spots in the Q2 session later on. The Styrian GP polesitter and winner After the first outing, Jorge Martin took the early lead in the session, followed by Alex Rins and Enea Bastianini. With less than five minutes to go, the riders came back on the track in order to get to Q2.

The track got quicker, so lap times were improving dramatically. Miguel Oliveira delivered a late shocker as he kicked Rins out of the top 2. Martin remained at the top of the standings, so they advanced to Q2.

It was time for the pole position battle in Q2 and numerous riders wasted no time and left the pits. Oliveira was the first to set a lap time, but his result was quickly beaten. Johann Zarco continued his dominance as he was on the provisional pole. However, shortly after, Fabio Quartararo set an astonishing lap, which became the quickest ever lap at Red Bull Ring.

After a short break, the on-track action was back as the riders were trying to improve their times. However, no one was able to get closer to the Yamaha rider, except for Martin, who had an incredible lap to take his second pole position in a row. Quartararo qualified second, while Francesco Bagnaia completed the top 3.
