Following a decent Saturday, Lando Norris admitted thinking he can still finish higher than P6 during the race and wants to “at least” overtake Pierre Gasly.
Once again, Norris managed to outqualify teammate Daniel Ricciardo on Saturday. The Briton made himself a place in Q3 and eventually qualified P6 ahead of tomorrow’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
The intervals were ridiculously small between Norris and P4 qualifier Sergio Perez. Gasly however managed to split both men, qualifying P5. Norris admitted he wants to get the most out of the game on Sunday and will try to finish the race P5 if not higher, as he thinks both fifth and fourth positions were reachable in qualifying.
“We could’ve done a little bit better,” Norris said. “Fourth or fifth was possible today.”
“We had the best package we could today. Team are doing a good job and we are working hard.”
“There are not many things you can do on this track because it is so difficult to overtake. We just make sure we keep concentrating and don’t make any silly mistakes, and I think we can still score some good points.”
“I am not unhappy because I think we are ahead of a lot of people we did not think we would be, mainly the Ferraris. It was a small chance because it was so close to fourth and fifth place and that we could have been ahead of them. I’m not super happy but happy enough.”
The 21-year-old also emphasized having his eyes riveted on Gasly’s position. The Frenchman will be Norris’ first prey in case of an opening.
“There is also a chance with the strategy to be ahead of one or two people, at least Pierre, so we will look into it tonight and see what we can do.”
