Lewis Hamilton has said he is “optimistic” about Mercedes’s chances this weekend after a good Friday for the team.
Friday in Hungary was very hot, conditions we may not see again this weekend with the prospect of rain on both Saturday and Sunday. Mercedes topped FP2 this afternoon and was second to Max Verstappen in the first session, which is a good foundation for the team.
Hamilton is very happy about how Friday went, saying the result gives him confidence for a good performance for the rest of this weekend.
“To see Valtteri and I just on the front row pace-wise, I think that’s great for the team, and we’ll only improve on that,” he said. “We’ve got some work to do tonight to try and see how we can finesse the car a little bit more, but it’s a good start.”
“I’m optimistic because I think we can definitely improve the car balance-wise. And if we can do that, it puts us in a better position for the race as well. But of course, it’s much nicer to drive when it’s cooler. These tires are not happy, most of the time anyway, so they definitely don’t like this temperature.”
Hamilton trails Verstappen by just 8 points heading into qualifying tomorrow.
