Jorge Lorenzo believes that Fabio Quartararo’s speed was a factor that did not help Maverik Vinales at all in 2021.
Quartararo is currently leading the MotoGP championship for Yamaha, with a 34-point lead over Johann Zarco. On the other hand, Vinales struggled a bit this season after the win in Qatar.
The issues faced by Vinales are not helping his relationship with the team, and that is why he asked Yamaha to end his contract at the end of the 2021 season. After his decision, he should join Aprilia in 2022, but nothing is confirmed yet.
“Everyone knew that the Yamaha/Vinales relationship was not easy, but nobody expected this separation,” Lorenzo said.
“Vinales suffered a lot because of the speed of Quartararo, who was almost always superior to him.
“This is not easy. For him, who has all the potential, not winning a title in five years at Yamaha led him to desperately take another path.
“Aprilia has improved, but it is not certain that he will go there. He could go to Suzuki or Ducati. We will see what he will do.”
It is already known that Vinales will sign neither with Ducati nor with Suzuki since the latter has already confirmed its line-up for the next season. Plus, the current Yamaha driver said that he could also take a year off, but he believes it would not be the best decision.
To conclude, Lorenzo also said that Quartararo is the favorite to win the 2021 championship, adding that he matured compared to last year.
“With Marc Marquez out for more than a year [with injury], 2020 was a bit of a strange championship,” Lorenzo added.
“Quartararo has managed to mature his head a lot and has become stronger than last season.
“He is the favorite for the title. I’m sure Marquez will get strong again little by little.”
