Two penalty points issued to Hamilton for Silverstone crash

2021 British Grand Prix, Friday – Steve Etherington

Lewis Hamilton crashed into max Verstappen in the first lap of the race. He received a 10-seconds penalty and two points were subtracted from his license.

Lewis was very aggressive in the first lap, and while trying to overtake on the inside at Turn 9, he touched the rear tire of Verstappen, who spun and hit the wall.

The incident was under investigation and the stewards handed him a 10-seconds penalty. Despite that, Hamilton was able to reach Leclerc in the last stages of the race and took the win anyway.

Here’s the FIA statement: “Cars 33 [Verstappen] and 44 [Hamilton] entered turn 9 [Copse] with Car 33 in the lead and Car 44 slightly behind and on the inside,” described the stewards in their judgment.

“Car 44 was on a line that did not reach the apex of the corner, with room available to the inside. When Car 33 turned into the corner, Car 44 did not avoid contact and the left front of Car 44 contacted the right rear of Car 33. Car 44 is judged predominantly at fault.”

Right now, Lewis has a total of four penalty points. Should a driver reach a total of 12 points, he will receive a race ban.
