Helmut Marko admitted that he would consider signing George Russell if he will not receive the offer to drive for Mercedes next season.
In the last few months, many rumors suggested that Mercedes had already reached an agreement with Russell for the 2022 season. However, nothing has been confirmed yet, and Marko admitted that bringing Russell to Red Bull would be interesting.
Despite admitting that, Marko also thinks that Mercedes will never let Russell go, “I can’t imagine it”, he said.
“Russell is certainly worth considering with the performances he is showing at Williams now,” Marko told Motorsport-Total. “But if Mercedes were to let him go, that would be such a faux pas. I honestly can’t imagine it.”
Moreover, signing Russell would mean leaving Sergio Perez without a seat. Considering the good results that he is having, that would create some chaos in the drivers’ market. Plus, if Russell will go to Mercedes, Valtteri Bottas will probably go back to Williams since he is not completely ready to leave the Formula 1 paddock.
