Promoting Pierre Gasly to Red Bull for the 2022 season would not be the right move for the Milton Keynes team, believes the former Mercedes driver, Nico Rosberg.
The French driver was demoted from Red Bull to Toro Rosso, now AlphaTauri, in 2019. The Frenchman was not delivering enough good performances, and the team decided to promote Alexander Albon.
After going back to Toro Rosso, Gasly did not give up and started to deliver amazing performances. Especially in the last two years, the French driver showed what he is capable of, and he also won a race in Monza last year.
Gasly believes to be able to go back to Red Bull, a top team. Franz Tost is also sure that Pierre is now ready for the move, but the final decision is in Helmut Marko’s hands.
However, Nico Rosberg believes that even though Gasly is performing incredibly well at AlphaTauri, it does not mean that it would be the same at Red Bull. The German thinks that not having a teammate as strong as Max Verstappen, could help Gasly, meaning that at Red Bull he would struggle more.
“You have to remember that the situation he has now is completely different mentally. He no longer has Verstappen by his side in the same car, and maybe that was the problem. He couldn’t mentally deal with such a strong teammate,” said Rosberg.
“That is the problem for Red Bull, and that is why they probably have not made a decision yet. Yes, it works for AlphaTauri, but it is not clear that it can do the same for Red Bull.”
