Toto Wolff has encouraged Mercedes to keep fighting for the 2021 championship, despite the large gaps to Red Bull ahead.

The last time Mercedes was more than 40 points behind their title rival was in 2013, and the last time Lewis Hamilton was 30 points away from the title lead was in 2016, when he was battling with Nico Rosberg for the title.

Despite the large gaps, Mercedes have rebounded from a bad season start quite a few times, notably in 2017 and 2018, when they were behind Ferrari at some point in the season. Wolff believes they can do it again, knowing Hamilton can be a beast in the final half of the year.

“We never resign any battle, it’s the last things we do,” Wolff said. “I am always a sceptical person, half-empty glass, but I am seeing the positives.”

“We have 13-14 races to go. We are one retirement away from Red Bull, no more, and we have lost more points than we should have lost to our own mistakes. Clearly in Austria the last two races we did not have the performance we must have in order to fight Red Bull and we need to get our act together in every single area and hopefully perform better on the other tracks.”

Mercedes have won seven of the last eight British Grands Prix, and will hope to make it eight out of nine when Formula 1 returns next weekend.
