It seemed a quiet race for Kimi Raikkonen until the last lap. Then, he turned into Sebastian Vettel, causing both of them to retire. The FIA decided to give him a penalty after reviewing the video evidence.
Raikkonen was running outside of the points and was catching George Russell on the last lap. He tried to attack the Briton in Turn 4, but they both locked up. Thus, Vettel tried to overtake Kimi by going on the right. At that moment, Kimi did not see the former Ferrari driver and turned right, touching his rival and causing a big shunt.
Both drivers were uninjured, and while Kimi could continue and bring the car back to the pit, Vettel’s Aston Martin was destroyed, and he retired on the last lap.
After a meeting, the stewards decided to give Kimi the following penalty: drive-through penalty, imposed after the race in accordance with Article 38.3 (20 seconds added to elapsed race time) 2 Penalty Points (6 points in a 12 month period).
The decision of the FIA does not change the race results since Kimi was outside the top ten. Moreover, even for Sebastian, the crash was not a big loss, considering he was not in the position to score points either.
