William Byron wins the NASCAR Cup Series qualifying at Road America ahead of the race later on Sunday.

The historic Cup Series race weekend at Road America continued with the qualifying on Sunday morning.

The session started with round 1, which determined the top 12 drivers that would battle for the pole position. William Byron took the early lead in round 1, followed by Christopher Bell and Cole Custer. Kyle Tilley had trouble as he had stopped on the track. The session was stopped.

Kyle Larson and Tyler Reddick had great laps, which promoted them both to the top 3. Road course experts Austin Cindric and AJ Allmendinger took over the lead shortly after. Bubba Wallace slowed down during his flying lap due to some technical issues. In the end, he stopped at the side of the track and round 1 was stopped again.

The drivers had less than 2 minutes to change the situation and get to round 2. However, another caution came out and round 1 was over. Cindric was the quickest. Allmendinger, Byron, Larson, Chastain, Hamlin, Reddick, Suarez, Truex Jr., DiBenedetto, Bowman, and Buescher advanced into round 2.

Several minutes later, the 10-minute shootout went underway. Larson set the early benchmark but was beaten by his teammate Byron. Reddick had a big advantage over Byron, but he made a mistake and then also spun, ruining his chances to get the pole.

That meant Byron took the pole position for this afternoon’s race. Larson would follow him on the front row, while Allmendinger qualified 3rd.
