Toto Wolff has confirmed that he would like to name Lewis Hamilton’s partner at Mercedes for the 2022 season during the summer break.
Earlier today, it has been confirmed that Lewis Hamilton will stay at Mercedes for the next two seasons. Team principal Wolff has now also confirmed that the second seat will also be decided in the coming two months. He glossed over the topic saying that both Hamilton and the team wanted to continue together, and it was just a matter of getting clarity for themselves.
“I think today is about Lewis and having that contract out of the way. With Lewis, we’ve been clear for a while that we wanted to continue. That was obvious for us. Now we can look at the second seat, it’s between those two [drivers]. We value them both for their strengths and for what they can contribute to the team.”
There is high speculation on whether the second seat will be taken by George Russell or Valterri Bottas. Wolff has divulged further sharing a few details about this.
“I’m happy Valtteri’s racing in Austria was really good, and he needs to consolidate that. He’s a known factor, and in the same way, we know the strengths and weaknesses of George.
“That decision is going to be made during the summer. Our first discussion is going to be with George and Valtteri and then hopefully we are sorted before the end of the season.”
