Williams’ George Russell felt that his stellar performance in qualifying at the Austrian Grand Prix was “on another level”, as Mr.Saturday reaches Q3 for the first time for Williams since 2017 and secures P9 for tomorrow’s race on medium tires.
After last week’s misery where he was forced to retire from the eighth place due to mechanical problems, this qualifying seems like another opportunity at redemption, one where he hopes he is lucky.
“As Saturdays go, we usually do have some good Saturdays, but this was on another level,” he admitted.
“Qualifying is already behind us, now it’s looking forward to the race. Ultimately, that’s the most important,” Russell admitted. “We have the AlphaTauris ahead of us on the softs, Sebastian and Lance on the softs as well. We’re in a really strong position. Let’s see.”
Ahead of him is Sebastian Vettel who is currently under investigation for allegedly blocking Fernando Alonso by slowing down. A penalty for the former is likely, in which case Russell starts P8, a great position to start from, according to Russell.
“We’re in P9 – but I saw what happened with Sebastian, so we’ll say P8,” he commented. “That position is a great place to be in any circumstances, let alone on the medium tire.”
Tomorrow seems perfect for Russell as the cars ahead of him are on soft tires, providing a strategic advantage to Russell and Williams, potentially moving up to P6, in an ideal situation.
“We managed to pull something out on the medium tire. I’m properly, properly hyped up in the car, probably the most I’ve been in a long time, to be honest. That was pretty special.”
