Charles Leclerc was elected driver of the day after a magnificent charge during the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix. The Monegasque thinks today’s race was one of his best performances in Formula One.
Last week in France, after showing a good shape through the beginning of the season, Ferrari had a race that gave them bitter tastes of the 2020 season. Both Leclerc and Sainz could not make their front tires work like they wanted to and saw their qualifying efforts wasted in a nightmarish race.
This weekend in Austria, the Italian team wanted to ‘finally’ sort the long-lasting front row issue that they already encountered multiple times in 2019 and 2020.
Yesterday’s qualifying session was in half shade, with Sainz being flunked out of Q3 and Leclerc encountering DRS issues. However, the race pace was outstanding for the Scuderia, Sainz pointing out that he had the best pace of the midfield and a similar pace to Perez.
Leclerc had a difficult start to the event, being forced to dive into the pitlane at the end of the first lap, following a touch with Gasly. The Monegasque then showcased all his talent, charging his way up and finishing the race P7, with the driver of the day award in the pocket.
“Today, it was really, really special. I mean, it’s been a long time that we had this type of race pace. It was good to see,” Leclerc told Sky.
“The pace was incredible. It’s probably one of my best performances in Formula 1 today, apart from the lap one.”
“We’ve been incredibly quick, but obviously this first lap basically stopped us from doing something much, much, much better today.”
“I’m really looking forward to next weekend obviously.”
