The AlphaTauris looked extremely quick in FP1 and FP3. Their drivers, Yuki Tsunoda and Pierre Gasly were able to carry this pace into qualifying. Tsunoda put together a strong lap in Q3, however, an incident with Bottas at turn 4 has forced the stewards to give him a 3-place grid penalty.

Tsunoda had a strong qualifying performance at the Styrian GP, especially, after causing a red flag at Baku and France. He finished the session P8.

During Bottas’ flying lap in Q3, he found himself blocked by Tsunoda at the exit of the downhill turn 4. Tsunoda was in front of Bottas and the nature of the turn prevented him from moving out of the way without hurting the Finn’s lap.

Despite this Tsunoda’s compromised situation, the stewards have placed a three-place grid penalty, pushing him back to P11, allowing George Russell to start the race in the points, at P10.
