McLaren’s Lando Norris has said that he found his performance during the qualifying session at the Styrian Grand Prix, at a circuit where he has found much success, to be surprising.

He talked about Sunday, stating that there is an opportunity to score points, rain or not. He also elaborated on his opinion of today’s qualifying attempts, saying that there were opportunities where he could have messed up.

“I was reasonably close to Alonso so I messed up turn one with the dirty air. The slipstream helped though which made the difference through the lap. The rest of the lap was very good, I didn’t make any big mistakes,” said a collected Norris.

“It was a lot of fun. The car was good,” Norris said post-qualifying regarding his performance. He regarded the Red Bull Ring as one of the “coolest tracks” during qualifying.

“It’s one of the coolest tracks to drive in qualifying. The high-speed corners are nice, it feels fast and I’m out of breath by the end of it. P3 tomorrow which I’m a bit surprised by it.”

Norris also added that it would be “nice to repeat last year’s podium,” given the current circumstances with the 2 horse battle between Red Bull and Mercedes. He has also acknowledged the need to capitalize on consequential events such as safety cars.

“It will be nice to repeat last year’s podium. We can still score some points. If there are safety cars, mistakes and penalties then we also need to capitalize on it.”

Norris currently stands at fourth in the Drivers’ Championship and will start the race in P3 after a 3-place drop penalty for Valtteri Bottas promotes Norris from P4 to P3. Styria will prove to be a major game-changer in both the Drivers’ and Constructor’s standings.
