Christian Horner was impressed by Max Verstappen’s performance on track in Q3 that allowed him to take pole at the Red Bull Ring.
Verstappen has looked in sync with the track through the practice sessions. He finished FP3 with fewer laps than Hamilton. In Q3, Verstappen was the only driver to achieve a lap time under 1 minute 4 seconds and took pole with only two laps.
Christian Horner was extremely relieved as he shared with Sky Sports: “I was a little concerned because Lewis had one more set of tires available in Q3. We looked at that too [to go for that strategy] but it can make you rushed for the out laps. You can’t do your warm-up laps the way you want to. Max was in a good rhythm.”
“It’s our first ever pole position here. Fantastic qualifying from the team. For Max to get two laps that were good enough for pole… when it’s so so close, it’s a great performance.”
Horner was not sure Red Bull could take pole position in Austria, but the conditions of the track allowed them to outscore Mercedes in the end.
“We thought they had a little more in hand, but the temperatures have gone up a bit and that has also had an impact on the cars. It’s such fine margins between these two teams [Red Bull and Mercedes]. We’ve just managed to get within a window, which Max is happy with.”
