Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas says it will be surprising if he gets penalized for a scary but “normal moment” in the pitlane. He also attempted to quell any doubt by stating that he was indeed summoned to see the stewards after his spin, adding that he expects nothing.
“It’s a normal mistake, it happens,” said a confident Bottas with regards to a potential penalty.
Nearby, McLaren’s Paul James complained on behalf of the team, calling the incident “ridiculous” with the spin being dangerously close to the McLaren pit crew.
“That’s absolutely ridiculous. He could have taken our guys out there, and the pit wall,” said a concerned James to FIA Race Director Michael Masi.
On a more calm tone, McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl commented on the matter, expressing that despite how scary it is, incidents such as that are ‘normal’. He said, “It was obviously a scary moment, but in the end it can happen.”
Bottas had more to say regarding his spin, explaining how it was the result of “trying something different.” He also said that he was summoned by the FIA to probably understand how the incident happened in the first place.
“We tried something different getting out from the box and there was some variable to what we normally do with the wheelspin and that’s why I spun. I’m sure they just want to understand what happened, really.”
