Formula 1 is ready to race twice at Red Bull Ring just like in 2020, and Fernando Alonso believes that it is a great moment for Alpine to test new things for the car to improve its performance.
The Spaniard thinks that the second race will be different from the first one since the teams will try new things on their cars. Plus, he also believes that racing twice on the same track will help the drivers and teams. That because at the pre-season testing there were only three days available to experiment.
“Having two weekends here might change the way things are prepared a bit, especially in the second GP. After only having a day and a half of testing in winter, I think that teams will use these two weekends to do some experiments on the configuration of the car.”
Alonso admitted that he needs to improve his performance and confidence in the rain and if it will be wet in Austria that will surely help him.
“I think that in the rain we need to improve, it is true that in Imola we ran in those conditions, but it was one of the first races. This weekend we can have rain in free practice, and I need that, to train once or twice in the rain. Even when you are supposed to do well in the rain, you always learn something new every weekend.”
Alonso concluded by saying that scoring points this weekend will not be easy, and Alpine needs to do everything perfect since the battle in the midfield is very tight.
“This time I will be more careful and try to see the checkered flag. It is a good circuit, and it is a very short lap, so the qualifying is quite compressed. Everyone is in two or three-tenths of a second. It will be a weekend in which you have to do everything perfectly on Saturday and also on Sunday if you want to score points, everything will be very even.”
