After Pierre Gasly scored yet another amazing result in qualifying, the Frenchman had to admit not expecting starting this high on the grid after three practice sessions full of struggles.
Yesterday, and for the fifth time in 7 Grand Prix weekends, Pierre Gasly managed to put his Alpha Tauri inside the top 6 of the qualifying session. The 25-year-old failed to make this qualifying streak perfect in Portugal and Spain where he qualified P9 and P12.
The home hero saw his first Q3 attempt get deleted after exiting the track limits. He only had one chance left to impress his home crowd and did not disappoint. After the session, Gasly explained being especially impressed by the improvements he has done with his team ahead of qualifying. The Rouen native did not think he would be able to outqualify two McLarens and a Ferrari following the struggles he encountered in practice sessions, especially due to the windy conditions.
“I’m really surprised to be there,” said Gasly. “I struggled a bit all weekend with the car. I didn’t feel so comfortable, been changing the balance with the wind conditions.”
“It’s really positive to split the two Ferraris and also outqualify the McLarens. This was quite intense as well. I was relieved in Q3 the first lap time was deleted, which we still need to check.”
“The track layout is quite different than what we experienced in the last few weekends. It was quite difficult, we tried to improve but we didn’t find the right thing but in qualifying, we made a couple of changes. I felt like this really went in the right direction and helped us.”
“We will have to see what we can do from there but I feel the car, we made a good improvement for quali so hopefully it’s going to be a good improvement for the race pace for tomorrow, compared to what we showed in FP2. I’m excited.”
