The Gresini team will move from Aprilia to Ducati from 2022, signing Fabio DiGiannantonio and Enea Bastianini to ride for the team.
Gresini was used as an outlet for Aprilia to develop their factory team since 2015, but the Italian marque will get factory status from next year. Gresini were initially tossing up being an Aprilia satellite team, but have settled for Ducati.
Bastianini will move from Esponsorama to Gresini after an impressive rookie year in the premier class. Alongside him will be Moto2 graduate Fabio DiGiannantonio. The 2018 Moto3 runner-up took his first intermediate class win in Jerez earlier this year and sits fifth in the title.
Gresini team owner and widow to Fausto, Nadia Padovini, said it was an emotional moment for the entire team, as they enter a new chapter following the passing of Gresini from COVID-19 earlier this year.
“It’s a very emotional moment for each of us,” she said. “In previous months, our efforts merged with a strong emotional push to shape the future of Gresini Racing, and now are immensely proud and happy to make the official announcement.”
“It is a project born out of continuity and based on values upon which Fausto built this amazing institution.”
The news means the 2022 MotoGP grid continues to grow, with VR46 having a full team on the 2022 grid as well.
