AlphaTauri team boss Franz Tost gave high praise of his driver Pierre Gasly, saying the Frenchman is among the best of current drivers.

Pierre Gasly has had the best season in his career so far, with 31 points in 6 races, an achievement possible due to his stellar drive towards the third position in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This marks his fourth occasion where he finished within the top six, leading to AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost claiming that Gasly is now one of the top drivers in Formula 1.

“Pierre always did a good job, but we could not provide him with a really good car in Portimao, and also a little bit in Barcelona. But in Monaco, we came back, and Baku as well,” Tost said regarding Gasly’s capabilities as a driver.

“He is there, and he belongs for me to the absolutely top drivers, because he gets everything out of the car, doesn’t make mistakes, and brings home points,” says a happy Tost, who has made it clear he wishes to retain Gasly for 2022, in light of the regulation changes.

He has also clarified that despite the advantages of having an experienced driver for a season where providing a competitive car will prove challenging, it is ultimately Red Bull’s call to make.

In addition, Tost has also recognized the need to change the pre-existing philosophy involving youngsters in F1, to better handle the upcoming 2022 regulations.

“We need a benchmark, we need to know where to go from the set-up of the car. That’s not possible with two young drivers, or two inexperienced drivers.”

Furthermore, Gasly was praised for his spectacular performance in Baku, where he secured a third career podium in an exciting Grand Prix. According to Franz Tost, Gasly’s speed in his AlphaTauri AT02 was apparent all weekend, a significant improvement from the self-proclaimed underachieving performances in previous Grands Prix.

“He had to take care of the tires, the brakes, the fuel consumption. And we were always safe side, and we wanted to have some reserves for the end of the race.”

The Frenchman has his contract with AlphaTauri set to expire in 2022, with rumors speculating a move to Alpine next season, despite dismissal from Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi last month. All things considered, it can be said that Gasly will prove to be a valuable asset in whichever team he is a part of next season, through his experience, consistency in scoring points, and the ability to extract the best of machinery.
