After a chaotic race in Baku, Sebastian Vettel managed to recover up to P2, scoring the first podium for Aston Martin.
It was not an easy start to the season as the German said, but in the last two races the team worked well and on Sunday they managed to achieve a great result.
In a race where two drivers had to retire due to tire failure, it was crucial to saving them to arrive until the end. That was exactly what Vettel did.
“It means a great deal. It’s been a tough start for us, and it was a great race, we had good pace. I think that was the key, I had a good start, made some positions straight away, then looked after my tires as soon as everybody went into the pits, I had good pace to overcut, I think Yuki at least, and then obviously the restart worked well for me, got another 2 positions there, and then yeah, we had fresher tires which I guess helped to warm them up later on, great day. I’m over the moon, for the team a podium is great, we didn’t expect it. Yesterday we didn’t quite get it but today it was sweet.
“We preserved the tires well, I think that was the secret, and we had a good pace of course.”
Today was Vettel’s first podium after the one in Turkey with Ferrari in 2020.
