Pierre Gasly had every reason to celebrate after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, as the Frenchman finished the turbulent race in 3rd place.
The AlphaTauri driver started from P4 and benefited from the retirement of race leader Max Verstappen with 3 laps to go.
After the race, there were initial statements from the top 3. Asked how it now feels to be third, Gasly said: “Incredible, I don’t really know what to say.
“Super intense last two laps, the car has been incredible all weekend, we showed every session we were there, but we didn’t think we would fight for a podium and in the end we did it. That feels incredible to get that podium.”
After the restart Gasly had to beat Leclerc to fix the podium. He admitted afterwards that it wasn’t easy.
“We had to get the elbows out, it was a difficult race with our engine issue, we lost a lot of power in the straight, I knew it was going to be difficult with Charles behind, I wasn’t sure if we were going to stop the car, but I had to go for that podium.”
Gasly’s teammate Yuki Tsunoda finished the race in P7 and thus both AlphaTauri drivers were in the points.
“Yeah, really good points. And I’m really happy Yuki did a great race as well, so, all in all, fantastic job and hopefully we can celebrate together tonight.”
