Charles Leclerc admitted to being shocked after grabbing pole position in Baku, saying his lap was “quite a shit”.

The Monegasque took his second pole position in a row after the one in Monaco. However, he admitted that his pole-lap was not very good.

At the end of his first flying lap, he found Lewis Hamilton ahead of him on the main straight, and he gained a lot of time thanks to that.

“It was quite a shit lap I thought,” said Leclerc after qualifying. “There were like two or three corners where I made mistakes, but then, of course, I had the big slipstream from Lewis in the final sector which helped me a little bit.

“Overall I think we would have been thereabouts on pole anyway without the slipstream so it’s a good day. I did not expect to be as competitive as we were today.”

On Friday, Ferrari was quite strong on the single-lap pace, but the race pace simulation was not the best. Moreover, Leclerc had some graining on the rear tires, meaning that Charles and Carlos Sainz could struggle on Sunday.

Anyway, the Monegasque driver said that he will do everything to keep Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen behind.

“I think Mercedes and Red Bull have more in the race so it’s going to be very difficult because it’s not Monaco as you can overtake,” added Leclerc. “Hopefully we can keep first place.”
