Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly went fastest by over three tenths of a second to top FP3, as Mercedes were still lackluster.
Formula 1 went out for their final practice session of the weekend, one last time for the teams and drivers to find the perfect setup around the tricky Baku circuit. One team who would be trying substantially harder to find time is Mercedes, who were absolutely nowhere on Friday, and the Silver Arrows fans would be desperately hoping the team is sandbagging.
The first cars out on track were the Haas duo, who were likely stuck at the back throughout the weekend. With a quarter of the session gone, it was Sergio Perez fastest. Max Verstappen ran off at turn 4 but reversed back onto the track, with no damage.
Mercedes were having another dismal day. With the session almost halfway gone, Lewis Hamilton was ninth, with Valtteri Bottas all the way down in 11th. Then Max Verstappen hit the wall, causing a red flag, and putting a lot of pressure on Red Bull, who seem to be the favorites this weekend. With 25 minutes to go, the session went green again, and Mercedes was obviously the first back out to try and figure out their problems.
Nicholas Latifi and Carlos Sainz were among more drivers caught out, both going up escape roads at various points on the track. Mazepin brushed the wall at turn 15 but got away with it. There was then a late virtual safety car as George Russell lost power, but it ended with seven minutes left.
Then Pierre Gasly went fastest right at the very end, and a massive tow gave Hamilton third place, with Perez in between. That was it for F1 action until qualifying later today.
The top 10 of FP3 are as follows:
|1||P. Gasly||Alpha Tauri||1.42.251|
|2||S. Perez||Red Bull||+0.344|
|8||Y. Tsunoda||Alpha Tauri||+0.993|
