Laurent Mekies assures that the team does not take FP1 and FP2 results into account as they expect opponents to be stronger.
Scuderia Ferrari had good results in the opening free practices in Azerbaijan, being the second quickest team of the day after Red Bull. However, the drivers did not have much optimism. For example, Carlos Sainz believed that the Prancing Horses were not as quick as in Monaco. The sporting director Mekies also thinks so and anticipates that they will not be able to compete with Red Bull and Mercedes.
“Of course Red Bull will be very, very strong, they are not the target this weekend,” he said.
“We have no doubt that Mercedes will be back up there tomorrow [on Saturday]. So we are not deluded by the classification,” he added.
“I think what we are looking at is to be best of the rest right now. There are a lot of good guys fighting for that position – the two McLarens which we anticipated would be very strong here. We still think they are very strong here.”
“There were many, many cars that are targeting those positions. But that’s what we are trying to get. A P5, a P4 is probably the best position we could have.”
