Red Bulls Sergio Perez has said he’s happy he’s understood the car after topping the second practice session at Baku.

Perez has spent the majority of the first part of this season closer to McLaren and Ferrari than to his teammate Max Verstappen. This weekend so far though, he seems to have turned a corner in his pace, as he was close to Verstappen in FP1 before going top in the evening session around the streets of Baku.

Speaking after the session, Perez has said he’s finally understood the RB16b, and hopes he can continue this pace going forward.

“I think we’ve made very good progress. After Monaco, we did a very deep analysis and today it was like, I finally understand how to drive this car, how I need to drive it, and so on,” Perez said.

“In all regards, I think this is the best Friday of the season, the most complete Friday in terms of data, in terms of how comfortable I feel with the car, and yes, I think we are definitely going to be in the mix – so hopefully tomorrow we are going to get a clean lap, which is important.”

With Mercedes seemingly well and truly off the pace around Baku, this weekend could be crucial for Perez and Red Bull as a team, if they can continue this form, and Mercedes stays outside the top ten.
