Mercedes has signed a special option that allows the team to start working on the Gen3 regulations.
As Formula E gets closer and closer to the introduction of the Gen3 rules, the teams need to make the decision regarding their future in the series. DS, Porsche, Nissan, Mahindra, and NIO 333 have already announced their commitment, while others are yet to do so. Mercedes is one of these teams. Earlier in the year, the team boss Ian James has confirmed that they need more time to decide.
The Silver Arrows are now closer to staying in Formula E after they have signed an option, which gives them an opportunity to start working on all the adjustments for the new regulations, according to Motorsport.com.
“We have signed our option as a manufacturer for Gen3 which means we can start important development work by taking part in the meetings between the FIA, the rights holder, and the manufacturers,” mentioned in the statement.
However, this does not mean that Mercedes is committed to the Gen3 era as it is “not yet an official confirmation of entry.”
Furthermore, Mercedes will “continue to evaluate how Formula E can best contribute to the overall strategy of Mercedes-EQ and the wider Mercedes-Benz organization.”
